Travelling to Sheffield & Accommodation in Sheffield

The conference will take place in the in the new Humanities Research Institute at the University of Sheffield, 34 Gell Street, Sheffield, S3 7QW (map — opens in a new window).

Travelling to Sheffield from Abroad

For overseas flights, by far the easiest airport to use is Manchester. From Manchester Airport there are regular direct trains to Sheffield, which take about an hour.

From Sheffield train station, the Supertram will take you to within a one minute walk to the conference venue ("University of Sheffield" stop — see map).

The tram stop at the train station is located at the back of the railway station. Tickets can be bought on the tram (the fare to the University is 80p). Trams from the station to the University run on the Blue route (destination "Malin Bridge"). During the day, trams run every 10 minutes (15 minutes on Sundays) from 6.00am to midnight. To reach the conference venue (Humanties Research Institute) disembark at the 'University of Sheffield' stop on Upper Hanover Street. Cross the tramlines, and then the road. After crossing the road, turn left and then immediately right into Leavygreave Road (before reaching the roundabout). The HRI is on your right, and can be approached either from Leavygreave Road itself, or from Gell Street, which is the first turning on the right.

Alternatively, taxis are available at the station.

Other airports are less convenient, though for European flights may be cheaper. The Robin Hood Doncaster-Sheffield airport is excellent for very low-cost European flights. Leeds/Bradford Airport and Birmingham Airport are also reasonably convenient. London airports are more difficult, but possible (Sheffield is 2:20 by train from London St. Pancreas). All of these are accessible by train and bus.
